40th Anniversary Fundraising Dinner

On May 30th 2009, we celebrated our 40th Anniversary Fundraising Dinner for Camp Shalom. The evening was a huge success and God blessed us with $27,000 through ticket sales and pledges, which has paid for a new Kubota ZD331 Lawnmower!

The evening started out with refreshments and hors d’oeuvres and a time to reconnect with Shalom friends from the past. The guests present represented every decade of Shalom’s past, with faces present from Shalom’s first days right up to the present.

Dinner was a steamingly delicious catered buffet and was followed by a mouthwatering assortment of desserts. The hum of conversation was never dry, with lots of musing over camp days passed, present, and future. To add to the reminiscing we enjoyed a wonderful slideshow, created by Karen Detmar with musical accompaniment by Mark Pluim, of camp photos spanning the history of Shalom.

After dinner we enjoyed a short time of worship, led by George Van Ankum & Wilma Mol, to praise God for the work of His sovereign hand here at Camp Shalom. Then we listened to a few speeches by people who have been influential in our ministry. Rev. John Drost, Camp Shalom’s first Director, spoke about the founding years at camp during the 70’s and Rev. Pastor Wilts, the following Director of Shalom, spoke about camp life during the 80’s.  Rev. Calvin Vermulun, previous Classis Youth Director and Camp Shalom Director, prepared a video speech about his experiences at camp during the 90’s, that we had the pleasure of viewing, and Tim Partridge, current Managing Director, spoke about his time here at camp during the last decade.

After recollecting all that God has done in the past, Jim VandenBerg, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, gave us a brief look at the future goals and hopes for Camp Shalom. We continued to praise God for His unfailing love and faithfulness, through song, and fittingly ended the evening lifting up our thanks, to our Lord and provider of all things, in prayer.
